    What is on the label

    Iron as ferric saccharate at nineteen milligrams, with folate at four hundred micrograms beside it. On a raspberry strip rather than a tablet you have to get down with a full glass of water.

    The long version

    The iron tablet is the supplement people quietly stop taking. It is large, it is usually taken away from food, and it is easy to abandon. None of that is a claim about iron. It is a claim about a tablet, and the tablet is the part we changed.

    Nineteen milligrams of iron, printed at 106% of the Daily Value because the reference amount is eighteen. Folate beside it, and that row rewards a second look: 400 mcg DFE (240 mcg folic acid) is one amount of folate counted two ways. DFE is the unit the rule for this nutrient asks for, and printing only one of the two figures is how a folate number ends up looking different from one tin to the next.

    The warning on this page is not our wording. It is the language required on iron-containing products, and we have not shortened it, softened it or moved it somewhere tidier. It is about children in a house, not about you, and it is the one respect in which this tin is genuinely unlike the other ten.

    The thing a tin cannot tell you is whether you need iron at all. That answer is a blood result, and it is the reason this is the only formula here we would rather you bought second, after asking.

    What a batch certificate is

    A certificate of analysis is a laboratory's report on one batch: what the label claims, what was measured, and the range it had to fall inside. It covers that batch and no other, which is why the lot code matters. We publish the numbers, not the certificate. The issuer forbids partial reproduction. The disintegration row is one of those laboratory measurements, taken against the specification the certificate states. It is not a reading taken in anyone's mouth: what a strip does on a tongue is the separate thing, and that is the one we describe as about 30 seconds.

    Tested by the manufacturer's laboratory. Iron measured 101.8% of its label claim, inside a stated band of 90.0% to 110.0%. Folate measured 110.6% against a specification of not less than 90.0% of the label claim, with no upper limit.

    The batch code on this certificate is malformed, so we cite none rather than print one the document does not support. We have asked the manufacturer to re-issue it with a valid code; the figures below are as reported.

    Here the alternative is a tablet, a capsule, a measured liquid or a gummy. FDA's guidance to industry puts trouble swallowing a tablet or capsule at as many as 2 in 5 Americans, and 'as many as' is its ceiling rather than its average.
