What your doctor is likely to focus on
The endocrinology and bariatric medicine guidelines on weight loss and bone health converge on a pretty consistent list of monitoring and intervention points:
- Baseline DEXA where indicated. Especially in postmenopausal women, men over 60, patients with prior fractures, or anyone with risk factors for osteoporosis. Some clinicians will recommend a baseline scan before significant weight loss begins.
- Resistance training. Bone is responsive to mechanical load. The evidence for resistance training as a counter-stimulus to weight-loss-related bone loss is consistent enough that most current guidelines treat it as standard.
