Short answer: Curcumin — the yellow compound in turmeric — is famously hard for the body to absorb. Researchers have studied this for decades, and the consistent finding is that plain, unenhanced curcumin is poorly absorbed, quickly broken down, and quickly cleared (Anand et al., 2007, Molecular Pharmaceutics). That is why plain "turmeric" capsules are often a bad deal on paper, and why serious formulas do something extra — a piperine pairing, or a lipid or phytosome carrier. This article explains why curcumin is so hard to absorb, and what the published work says actually helps.
An earlier version of this article got this wrong. It led with specific absorption percentages and framed our own sublingual strip as a fix for curcumin's absorption problem. Both of those were more confident than the evidence allows. We have rewritten it. We no longer publish absorption figures for any ingredient, and we do not claim a strip solves curcumin's chemistry — because it does not.
What curcumin actually is
Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid — a bright-yellow polyphenol — found in the root of Curcuma longa, the turmeric plant. When people say "turmeric," they usually mean the whole spice, which is only a small fraction curcuminoids by weight. When researchers say "curcumin," they mean the isolated compound. That distinction matters the moment you start reading labels: "1,000 mg turmeric" and "1,000 mg curcumin extract standardized to 95% curcuminoids" are very different amounts of the actual molecule. (That 95% is an extract purity spec on the raw material — it is not an absorption number.)
Curcumin has been used in cooking and traditional practice for centuries, which is exactly why it is so well studied and so heavily marketed. But its chemistry is a problem child: it is poorly water-soluble, chemically unstable at the pH of the intestines, and aggressively processed by the liver. Those three traits are the whole story of why absorption is low.
The four-part absorption problem
Plain curcumin faces four obstacles between your mouth and your bloodstream, and it loses ground at every one.
1. Poor solubility. Curcumin barely dissolves in water. A compound that will not dissolve cannot be absorbed efficiently across the gut wall — it mostly passes through.
2. Chemical instability. At the neutral-to-alkaline pH of the small intestine, curcumin degrades quickly into other compounds. A meaningful share is chemically gone before it is even absorbed.
3. Rapid metabolism. What does get absorbed is immediately conjugated — the gut wall and liver attach glucuronide and sulfate groups to it — which is part of first-pass metabolism. The conjugated forms have much lower activity and are cleared fast.
4. Fast elimination. Whatever survives is excreted quickly. Blood levels of free curcumin after an oral dose are famously low and short-lived.
Stack those four losses together and you get the reputation curcumin has. It is not that curcumin "does not work" — it is that a plain capsule delivers a small, fleeting fraction of what is printed on the label. The number on the bottle and the amount that reaches your blood are very different quantities, which is the core theme of bioavailability itself.
The piperine pairing: the most famous absorption strategy
The best-known approach is black pepper. A frequently cited study (Shoba et al., 1998, Planta Medica) reported that giving piperine — the active compound in black pepper — alongside curcumin improved curcumin's measured absorption under the conditions tested. The proposed mechanism: piperine slows some of the glucuronidation that clears curcumin, so more of it stays in circulation longer.
Worth being precise about what that study was: swallowed doses, in a small group, decades ago, using a specific extract. It is a real and reasonable basis for pairing the two ingredients. It is not a promise about what any given product will do in you, and we are not going to reprint its numbers as if they were a product spec.
This is why so many turmeric products add "BioPerine" or black pepper extract. If you are buying a swallowed turmeric capsule, the presence of piperine is one of the few label features that reflects the absorption science at all. A plain turmeric capsule with no absorption strategy is the one to be skeptical of.
The other enhancement strategies (and what they trade)
Piperine is not the only approach. The formulation world has several, each with tradeoffs:
Lipid/fat pairing. Because curcumin is fat-soluble, taking it with a fatty meal or in an oil-based carrier improves uptake. Simple, cheap, real — but modest.
Phytosome complexes. Binding curcumin to phospholipids (the "phytosome" formulations you will see branded) improves solubility and measured absorption in published studies. More effective, more expensive.
Nanoparticle / micellar formulations. Shrinking curcumin into nano-sized particles or micelles improves solubility and measured absorption in some trials — at the highest formulation cost and complexity.
What all three have in common: they were developed and tested as swallowed products. They work on the gut-and-liver problem from inside the gut. That is the honest place to point anyone whose priority is maximum curcumin absorption.
Does a sublingual film fix this? No.
This is the part we get asked about, so here it is plainly. Sublingual absorption is a real pharmacological route — some small, fat-friendly molecules do cross the tissue under the tongue. But curcumin is not a good candidate for it, and a thin film that dissolves in about 30 seconds gives very little contact time with that tissue either way. Most of what you take in any oral format still goes down and through the digestive tract.
So: we do not claim our film bypasses digestion, skips the stomach, avoids first-pass metabolism, or absorbs better than a capsule. Those are the exact phrases the supplement industry overuses, and for curcumin they are not supportable. If you see a brand — including a strip brand — telling you their format solves curcumin's absorption problem, ask them for the data.

When a swallowed, enhanced curcumin is the better choice
If your goal is a specific, higher-dose curcumin regimen — the kind used in published trials — a well-formulated swallowed product (piperine-paired, phytosome, or micellar) is the right tool, not a thin film. Those research protocols use gram-level doses that no strip can hold, and those oral formulations were engineered specifically to push absorption at that scale. A sublingual strip is a convenient daily-ritual format for people who cannot or will not swallow capsules. It is not a substitute for a clinical-style high-dose curcumin protocol. If that is what you are after, buy an enhanced oral formulation and take it with food.
And to be plain on compliance and honesty: curcumin is a dietary ingredient, not a medicine. Nothing here is a claim that curcumin treats, cures, or prevents any condition. If you are considering curcumin for a specific health reason, that is a conversation for your clinician — especially since curcumin can interact with blood-thinning medication and is not recommended at supplement doses in pregnancy.
How to read a turmeric or curcumin label
Four checks that cut through the marketing. First, does it say curcumin extract standardized to curcuminoids (good) or just turmeric powder (mostly filler for this purpose)? Second, is there an absorption strategy on the panel — piperine/BioPerine, a phospholipid/phytosome complex, or a micellar system? Third, what is the actual curcuminoid amount, not the herb weight? Fourth, be wary of giant "milligrams of turmeric" numbers used to look potent — without standardization, a big number is just a big number. And fifth, a bonus: does the brand publish a certificate of analysis? We do, for every product.

A format someone actually keeps using is a real advantage. It is not the same thing as an absorption advantage, and we are not going to blur the two.
We do not publish the curcumin dose in the Hangover formula, because the manufacturer has not published it — and we will not invent a number to fill the gap. Every active is named on the label, with no proprietary blends. Founder's compulsion, not a marketing line: I would rather tell you exactly where our format helps and where a swallowed enhanced product wins.

For a modest daily botanical stack you will actually stick with — especially if capsules are hard for you to swallow — a strip is a reasonable format. Match the format to the use.
Can I just eat more turmeric in food? Culinary turmeric delivers only a small amount of curcuminoids, and absorption is still low — though cooking it in fat and with black pepper (as many traditional dishes do) genuinely helps. Food turmeric is great for flavor and everyday use; it is not a high-dose delivery method.
The bottom line
Curcumin's problem was never whether it is interesting — it is whether much of it reaches your blood. Plain turmeric capsules deliver very little of the curcumin on the label; the products worth buying do something about that, whether it is piperine, a lipid or phytosome carrier, or a micellar system. Read for the absorption strategy, not the biggest milligram number. And do not believe any format — ours included — that claims to have solved curcumin's chemistry. That is the un-hyped truth of the world's most-marketed spice.
