Milk. Whey protein in protein-blend supplements. Lactose as a filler and flow agent in tablets. Casein and caseinates in some protein powders. "Natural flavors" that are sometimes milk-derived but not specifically labeled as such.

Soy. Soy lecithin is one of the most common emulsifiers in soft-gel capsules and fat-soluble vitamin formulas (especially vitamin E). Soybean oil as a carrier in gel caps. Some vitamin D3 supplements use soy-derived cholecalciferol.

Wheat. Wheat starch as a tablet binder or disintegrant. Modified food starch (sometimes wheat-derived) in coatings. Some B-vitamin supplements historically used wheat germ oil. A 2025 study in Scientific Reports found that among solid oral dosage forms in the analgesic category, over 50% contained gluten-bearing excipients — and the supplement industry uses many of the same inactive ingredients.

Fish/Shellfish. Omega-3 supplements (obviously). Glucosamine from shellfish. Some calcium supplements derived from oyster shell. Chondroitin (often shark cartilage).

Tree nuts/Peanuts. Nut-derived oils as carriers. Some specialty supplements marketed as "whole food" or "plant-based" that include nut powders. Shared-line contamination from nut-based protein products.

Eggs. Egg lecithin in some emulsified supplements. Less common than soy lecithin, but present in certain prenatal and cholesterol-support formulas.

Sesame. The newest addition — and the hardest to spot. Sesame oil as a carrier in some softgels. Sesame-derived compounds in "proprietary blends" where individual ingredients aren't always clearly labeled.

Gelatin — the unlisted ninth problem. Gelatin isn't one of the Top 9 allergens, but it deserves mention because it's in roughly 80% of supplement capsules on the market and it triggers reactions in a clinically documented subset of people — including those with alpha-gal syndrome (a tick-borne red-meat allergy affecting an estimated 450,000 Americans). Why "allergen-free" on the label doesn't mean what you think

There are three levels of allergen claims on supplements, and they mean very different things:

Level 1: "Does not contain [specific allergen]." This means the formulator didn't intentionally add that allergen as an ingredient. It says nothing about the manufacturing environment.

Level 2: "Manufactured in a facility that also processes [allergen]." This is voluntary transparency. It tells you cross-contact risk exists. The brand doesn't have to say this — the fact that they do is a good sign, but the absence of this warning on another product doesn't mean the risk isn't there.

Level 3: "Manufactured in a dedicated allergen-free facility" or "Third-party tested for [allergen] absence." This is the real standard. Dedicated lines, clean-room protocols, and batch-level testing for allergen residues. The FDA affirmed pullulan as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for food use. It's listed in the USP (United States Pharmacopeia), the European Pharmacopoeia, and the Japanese Pharmacopoeia. EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) has also evaluated and approved it.

What makes pullulan specifically useful for allergen-free supplements:

No animal-derived inputs. Unlike gelatin (bovine/porcine collagen), pullulan is entirely plant-origin. No mammalian tissue, no fish, no shellfish, no eggs.

No soy, wheat, dairy, nut, or sesame in the production pathway. The fermentation substrate is typically tapioca-derived maltodextrin or corn-derived dextrose — neither of which is a Top 9 allergen. The fungus does the work; the output is a pure polysaccharide.

Inherently gluten-free. Pullulan contains no gluten proteins (gliadin, glutenin) because it's a carbohydrate polymer, not a protein. There's nothing to cross-react with.

Low cross-reactivity profile. Because pullulan is a simple glucose polymer with no protein content, it doesn't trigger IgE-mediated allergic responses. Published safety assessments have consistently found no allergenicity — which is why it passed GRAS review and pharmacopeial listing without allergen restrictions.

The excipient problem most brands won't talk about

Here's the uncomfortable truth about supplement manufacturing: the capsule shell and excipients often contain more allergen risk than the active ingredient itself.

A standard two-piece hard capsule is either gelatin (animal-derived, alpha-gal risk) or HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose — plant-derived, generally safe). But the capsule is just the container. Inside, the active ingredient is blended with flow agents (magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide), fillers (microcrystalline cellulose, calcium phosphate), binders (sometimes wheat starch or modified food starch), and disintegrants (croscarmellose sodium, sodium starch glycolate — "starch" that may be wheat-derived).

For soft-gel capsules, the picture is worse. The shell is almost always gelatin. The fill is typically the active dissolved in an oil — often soybean oil or a blend that includes soy lecithin as an emulsifier. A fish oil supplement in a gelatin softgel with soy lecithin hits three allergen categories (fish, mammalian collagen, soy) before you even look at the active ingredient.

Strips don't have this problem because strips don't have excipients in the traditional sense. The pullulan film is the delivery system. The active ingredients are embedded directly in the film matrix during manufacturing. There's no capsule to fill, no binder to hold a tablet together, no emulsifier to suspend an oil. The ingredient list is short because the format doesn't need the structural complexity that creates the allergen surface.

When an allergen-free strip isn't the right answer

I'd be lying if I said strips replace every supplement for every allergen-sensitive person. They don't. A few categories where you still need a pill or capsule — and where allergen-conscious brands that use HPMC capsules with clean excipient lists are the better choice:

Calcium and magnesium. These are bulk minerals that need gram-level doses and gut-mediated absorption. You can't fit 500 mg of calcium citrate in a thin film. An HPMC capsule from a dedicated allergen-free facility is the right format here.

3. Check for voluntary "May contain" or "Manufactured in a facility that processes" warnings. These are optional. Their presence is informative. Their absence is not reassuring — it just means the brand chose not to disclose shared-facility risk.

4. Call the manufacturer. This sounds extreme, but for severe allergies (anaphylaxis risk), it's what allergists recommend. Ask specifically: "Is this product manufactured on shared equipment with [your allergen]?" and "Do you batch-test for [allergen] residues?" 5. Look for third-party certifications. NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified, and Informed Sport all require facility audits that include allergen controls. GF (Gluten-Free) certification from GFCO (Gluten-Free Certification Organization) requires testing below 10 ppm — stricter than the FDA's 20 ppm threshold. These certifications cost money, which is why budget brands don't have them.
