If you have a food allergy — a real one, the kind where you read every label twice and carry an epinephrine auto-injector — the supplement aisle is not designed for you. It’s designed for the large majority of people who can swallow a gelatin capsule without thinking about it. Everyone else gets to play detective.
A correction before anything else. An earlier version of this article was titled “Allergen-Free Supplement Strips: How Pullulan Removes the Top 9 Allergens,” and it stated that every XYNE strip is free of all nine FDA-recognized major allergens. That was false, and for anyone with a shellfish allergy it was dangerous. Our Intimate Vitality strip contains oyster peptide. It contains shellfish. Pullulan is the film base — the material the strip is made of. It does not make everything we put into that film allergen-free, and no film base ever could. I’ve rewritten this article around the actual per-product facts and added a truth table below. The FDA’s Top 9 allergens — and why supplements aren’t exempt
The FASTER Act of 2021 (effective January 1, 2023) formally recognized nine major food allergens in the United States: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. These nine account for roughly 90% of all food-allergic reactions in the US, according to the FDA.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: dietary supplements are regulated as a subcategory of food under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. That means the same allergen-labeling rules apply. If a supplement contains an intentionally added ingredient derived from one of the Top 9, it must be declared on the label.
The word “intentionally” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Cross-contamination during manufacturing — shared equipment lines, shared facilities, airborne particulates — is a different story. There’s no federal requirement to disclose “may contain” warnings for cross-contact. Some brands do it voluntarily. Most don’t. If you’re severely allergic, the label tells you what’s in the formula. It doesn’t reliably tell you what’s in the factory.
Where the Top 9 actually hide in your supplement cabinet
The active ingredient is often not the problem. It’s everything else in the pill — the excipients, binders, fillers, coatings, and capsule shell materials that make up the physical structure of the product. Here’s where each allergen shows up:
Milk. Whey protein in protein-blend supplements. Lactose as a filler and flow agent in tablets. Casein and caseinates in some protein powders. “Natural flavors” that are sometimes milk-derived but not specifically labeled as such.
Soy. Soy lecithin is one of the most common emulsifiers in soft-gel capsules and fat-soluble vitamin formulas (especially vitamin E). Soybean oil as a carrier in gel caps. Some vitamin D3 supplements use soy-derived carriers.
Wheat. Wheat starch as a tablet binder or disintegrant. Modified food starch (sometimes wheat-derived) in coatings. Some supplements historically used wheat germ oil. Published analyses of solid oral dosage forms have repeatedly found gluten-bearing excipients in products not labeled as containing gluten, and the supplement industry uses many of the same inactive ingredients as the drug industry.
Fish and shellfish. Omega-3 supplements, obviously. Glucosamine from shellfish. Some calcium supplements derived from oyster shell. Chondroitin, often from shark cartilage. And — as our own Intimate Vitality strip demonstrates — marine-derived peptides used as actives in their own right.
Tree nuts and peanuts. Nut-derived oils as carriers. Some specialty supplements marketed as “whole food” or “plant-based” that include nut powders. Shared-line contamination from nut-based protein products.
Eggs. Egg lecithin in some emulsified supplements. Less common than soy lecithin, but present in certain prenatal and cholesterol-support formulas.
Sesame. The newest addition — and among the hardest to spot. Sesame oil as a carrier in some softgels. Sesame-derived compounds inside “proprietary blends” where individual ingredients aren’t clearly labeled.
Gelatin — the unlisted problem. Gelatin isn’t one of the Top 9, but it deserves mention because it’s in a large share of supplement capsules and it triggers reactions in a documented subset of people — including those with alpha-gal syndrome, a tick-borne allergy to mammalian meat. Gelatin is derived from bovine or porcine collagen. If you react to mammalian meat, you may react to your fish oil capsule shell without knowing why.
Why “allergen-free” on a label doesn’t mean what you think
There are three levels of allergen claims on supplements, and they mean very different things:
Level 1: “Does not contain [specific allergen].” This means the formulator didn’t intentionally add that allergen as an ingredient. It says nothing about the manufacturing environment.
Level 2: “Manufactured in a facility that also processes [allergen].” This is voluntary transparency. It tells you cross-contact risk exists. A brand doesn’t have to say this — the fact that they do is a good sign, but the absence of the warning on another product doesn’t mean the risk isn’t there.
Level 3: “Manufactured in a dedicated allergen-free facility” or “batch-tested for allergen absence.” This is the real standard. Dedicated lines, clean-room protocols, and batch-level testing for allergen residues. Very few supplement brands operate at this level.
An earlier version of this article claimed XYNE operates at Level 3. We do not, and I shouldn’t have written it. Our strips are made at a cGMP-certified facility with certificates of analysis for identity, purity and potency on every batch — that’s real and you can ask for them. But our own line includes a shellfish-containing product, which by definition means the facility handles a Top 9 allergen. If you have an anaphylactic allergy, treat our products the way you’d treat any other brand’s: read the label, and call before you buy.

Two things to notice. First, only Iron and Mushroom Focus carry an explicit manufacturer designation of being free of all nine major allergens — the rest simply have no Top 9 ingredient in the formula, which is a Level 1 claim, not a Level 3 one. Second, we currently have one product that contains shellfish and one where the animal source of an ingredient hasn’t been specified to us. I’d rather print that here than let you find it on a label after checkout.
On halal: XYNE holds no halal certification. An earlier version of this article said our strips were “halal-compatible,” which was a self-declaration, and self-declaration is exactly what I criticize other brands for. What pullulan actually is — and what it genuinely solves
Pullulan is a polysaccharide produced by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans through fermentation of simple sugars. Chemically, it’s a water-soluble, film-forming carbohydrate with no structural relationship to any of the Top 9 allergens.
The FDA has affirmed pullulan as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for food use. It’s listed in the United States Pharmacopeia, the European Pharmacopoeia, and the Japanese Pharmacopoeia. EFSA has also evaluated it.
What the film base genuinely does for allergen-sensitive people:
No animal-derived inputs in the film itself. Unlike gelatin, pullulan involves no mammalian tissue, no fish, no shellfish, no eggs. If gelatin capsules are your problem — and for people with alpha-gal syndrome they are a real one — a pullulan film removes that specific exposure.
No soy, wheat, dairy, nut, or sesame in the film’s production pathway. The fermentation substrate is typically tapioca- or corn-derived, neither of which is a Top 9 allergen.
Inherently gluten-free. Pullulan contains no gluten proteins because it’s a carbohydrate polymer, not a protein.
No protein content means no IgE target. Published safety assessments have not found pullulan to be allergenic, which is why it cleared GRAS review and pharmacopeial listing without allergen restrictions.
And here is the boundary, stated plainly: all of that is about the film, not about what’s in the film. Pullulan is the paper. The actives are the writing. An oyster peptide embedded in a pullulan film is still oyster. A collagen peptide of unspecified animal origin is still animal-derived. The base material eliminates the excipient-and-capsule category of allergen risk, which is genuinely most of the risk in a typical supplement — but it cannot do anything about an active ingredient you deliberately put in.
The excipient problem most brands won’t talk about
Here’s the uncomfortable truth about supplement manufacturing: the capsule shell and excipients often carry more allergen risk than the active ingredient.
A standard two-piece hard capsule is either gelatin (animal-derived, alpha-gal risk) or HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose — plant-derived). But the capsule is just the container. Inside, the active is blended with flow agents (magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide), fillers (microcrystalline cellulose, calcium phosphate), binders (sometimes wheat starch or modified food starch), and disintegrants (croscarmellose sodium, sodium starch glycolate — “starch” that may be wheat-derived).
For soft-gels, the picture is worse. The shell is almost always gelatin. The fill is typically the active dissolved in an oil — often soybean oil, or a blend with soy lecithin as an emulsifier. A fish oil supplement in a gelatin softgel with soy lecithin touches three allergen categories before you even look at the active.
Strips avoid most of this because the pullulan film is the delivery system. The actives are embedded directly in the film matrix. There’s no capsule to fill, no binder holding a tablet together, no emulsifier suspending an oil. Our strips are also sweetened with stevia and monk fruit rather than sugar. The “Other Ingredients” line is short because the format doesn’t need the structural complexity that creates most of the allergen surface. That is a real, checkable advantage of the format — it’s just a narrower one than the headline I originally wrote.
When a strip isn’t the right answer
Strips don’t replace every supplement for every allergen-sensitive person. A few categories where you still want a capsule — ideally an HPMC capsule from a brand with a clean excipient list:
Calcium and magnesium. These need gram-level doses. You can’t fit 500 mg of calcium citrate into a thin film. XYNE doesn’t sell either one, for exactly this reason.
Anything needing a large dose. High-dose vitamin C, protein, bulk fiber. Same arithmetic problem. We don’t sell these either.
Omega-3 fatty acids. These are oils and need a softgel or liquid. If you’re fish-allergic and want omega-3, algae-derived DHA in an HPMC capsule is the path — not a strip.
Anything where you’ve been told a strip absorbs better. Worth saying clearly, because I used to say the opposite in this very article: a strip is not a better-absorbing format. Most of what’s in a strip gets swallowed after it dissolves and takes exactly the same route as a capsule — that’s true of the probiotic, the iron, the mushroom extracts, the collagen and the fat-soluble vitamins alike. Sublingual absorption is a real pharmacological route, but it applies to a small number of small molecules and it is not what most of our ingredients rely on. So the honest pitch is not “better absorption.” It’s: no capsule shell, no gelatin, no soy emulsifier, no wheat binder, nothing to swallow, no water, and a short ingredient list you can read in one breath. For someone who gags on pills or who has spent years vetting excipients, that’s worth something on its own.
How to actually read a supplement label for allergens
If you’re managing a food allergy and taking supplements, here’s the practical checklist — the version I’d hand to a family member:
1. Read “Other Ingredients” first, not “Supplement Facts.” The active panel tells you what the supplement is supposed to be. The “Other Ingredients” section tells you what else you’re taking. That’s where gelatin, soy lecithin, wheat starch and lactose live.
2. Then read the actives anyway. Our own Intimate Vitality strip is the case study: the allergen is the active, not the excipient. Marine peptides, shellfish-derived glucosamine, and unspecified collagen sources all sit in the Supplement Facts panel, not the fine print.
3. Look for “Contains” allergen statements. Federal law requires a “Contains: [allergen]” statement if a Top 9 allergen is intentionally present. Its absence means no Top 9 ingredient was added — it does not cover cross-contact.
4. Call the manufacturer. For anaphylaxis-risk allergies this is what allergists recommend. Ask: “Is this made on shared equipment with [your allergen]?” and “Do you batch-test for [allergen] residues?” Ask us the same questions.
5. Look for third-party certifications. NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified, and Informed Sport all require facility audits that include allergen controls. GFCO gluten-free certification requires testing below 10 ppm, stricter than the FDA’s 20 ppm threshold. These cost money, which is why budget brands don’t carry them — and, to be straight with you, neither do we.

Does pullulan make a supplement allergen-free?
No. Pullulan is the film base. It is itself free of the Top 9 and free of animal-derived material, which removes the gelatin, soy lecithin and wheat starch risks common to capsules and tablets. It has no effect on the allergen status of the active ingredients embedded in it.

The bottom line
Tens of millions of Americans live with food allergies. For them, “Other Ingredients: gelatin, soy lecithin, modified food starch” isn’t fine print — it’s a risk assessment. The supplement industry hasn’t caught up to this, and until a few days ago neither had this article.
What pullulan film honestly does: it removes the gelatin capsule, the soy emulsifier, the wheat binder and most of the excipient guesswork. For a lot of people that is the entire problem, solved.
What it doesn’t do: make an active ingredient safe. If we put oyster in a strip — and we did — that strip contains shellfish, and the film base is irrelevant to that fact. Any brand telling you their delivery format makes their whole catalogue allergen-free is either not thinking carefully or hoping you won’t.
Read the table. Read the label. Call us if you’re unsure. That’s the standard I’d want for my own family, and it’s the one this article should have held itself to the first time.
