The gelatin problem: what's hiding in a standard capsule

The nutrients vegans actually need to supplement — and why format matters
Going plant-based removes a few nutrients from your plate that are hard to get elsewhere. This isn't a knock on the diet; it's just chemistry. The short list most dietitians flag: vitamin B12, vitamin D, omega-3 (EPA/DHA), iron, and sometimes zinc and iodine.
B12 is the non-negotiable one. It's produced by bacteria, not plants, and there is no reliable unfortified plant food source — a point the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements states plainly in its B12 fact sheet. Vegan capsule alternatives, ranked by what they actually are
If you want off gelatin, you have four honest options. Here's the plain-English version of each.
1. HPMC (hypromellose) capsules. These are the standard "vegetarian capsule" — made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant-derived cellulose. They look and behave almost exactly like gelatin capsules, they're widely available, and they're genuinely vegan. If you like the capsule format and just want off animal gelatin, HPMC is the direct swap. This is the one I'd point most people to first.
2. Pullulan capsules. Pullulan is a polysaccharide produced by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans — plant-fermentation-derived, FDA-affirmed GRAS, and allergen-free. It's a premium vegan shell with a better oxygen barrier than HPMC, which matters for sensitive actives. Slightly pricier, genuinely vegan.
3. Vegan softgels. Newer plant-based softgel shells (usually starch- or carrageenan-based) exist for oils like algae omega-3. They work, but they're less common and you have to verify each one.
4. Sublingual strips. A pullulan film dissolves under the tongue in about 30 seconds — no shell to swallow at all. Vegan by construction for the nutrients that fit the format (I'll be honest below about the ones that don't). It's the same material family as pullulan capsules, just delivered mucosally instead of swallowed.
Notice that three of the four are just "a capsule that isn't gelatin." You do not have to change how you take your supplements to stop swallowing animal collagen. You just have to change the shell.
B12: the vegan-critical nutrient where format changes the math
Since B12 is the one nutrient nearly every vegan has to supplement, it's worth spending a paragraph on the delivery detail — because this is where the vegan question and the absorption question genuinely overlap.
The most common synthetic form, cyanocobalamin, is poorly absorbed when swallowed: oral absorption sits around 1.2% per dose, versus roughly 28% via the sublingual route (NIH ODS; Sharabi et al., 2003). The body-ready form, methylcobalamin, does somewhat better both ways — about 13% oral versus roughly 51% sublingual. The industry's usual workaround for the low oral number is simply a very large pill: absorb 1% of a 1,000 mcg tablet and you've still moved your serum level. That works. It's also a lot of excreted B12.
For a vegan taking B12 every single day for life, the route is worth a thought. A sublingual B12 sidesteps the low oral-absorption problem, and in strip form the shell is vegan automatically. But — and I mean this — a plain high-dose vegan B12 tablet in an HPMC capsule is a completely legitimate choice too. Deficiency correction doesn't require peak efficiency; it requires consistency. Take the one you'll actually take.
Vitamin D, omega-3, and iron: the other vegan gaps
Vitamin D. The D3 form (more effective at raising blood levels than D2) is traditionally made from lanolin — sheep's wool — so it's not vegan by default. Omega-3. Skip the fish oil and go to the actual source fish get it from: algae. Algal-oil EPA/DHA is fully vegan and comes in vegan softgels or liquid. This one usually has to be a swallowed format, not a strip — the effective dose is too large for a thin film. That's fine; the point is getting it, and a vegan algal softgel does that.
Iron. Plant (non-heme) iron absorbs less efficiently than the heme iron in meat, so some plant-based eaters supplement — but standard iron pills carry a well-documented GI-tolerance problem, with studies finding roughly 30–40% of users report side effects like constipation and nausea within the first month (Tolkien et al., 2015, PLOS ONE). Iron itself is usually already vegan; the shell is the only thing to check. Pair iron with vitamin C and take it as your gut tolerates.
When a vegan pill still beats a strip
Here's the part a strip founder is supposed to skip. I won't.
If your situation is a bulk-dose nutrient — calcium, magnesium, a large algae-omega-3 dose, or a fiber/greens supplement — a vegan capsule or softgel is the right answer, not a strip. A thin sublingual film simply can't hold enough active for those, and several of them (calcium, magnesium) actually absorb better through the gut anyway. A vegan HPMC capsule solves the ethics question without fighting the chemistry.
Same goes if your situation is a gut-colonizing probiotic: you want those strains to reach the intestine, so a swallowed vegan capsule is correct and a sublingual route would defeat the purpose. How to actually read a "vegan" label in 60 seconds
You don't need to trust the front of the bottle. Run this quick audit instead.
First, find the "other ingredients" or "capsule" line — not the Supplement Facts panel, the small print below it. If you see the word gelatin, it's not vegan, full stop. If you see HPMC, hypromellose, vegetable cellulose, or pullulan, the shell is plant-based.
Second, check the active's source for the known animal-derived nutrients: vitamin D should say "D3 (from lichen)" or "D2," omega-3 should say "algal" or "algae," and glucosamine should say "vegetarian" or "from corn." Silence on source usually means the conventional animal version.
Third, look for a third-party vegan certification mark (Vegan Society, Certified Vegan) if it matters to you — it's not required, but it means someone audited the whole chain, including hidden processing aids like animal-derived glycerin or magnesium stearate.
