If you eat plant-based and take a daily supplement, here's a question worth sitting with: is that supplement actually vegan? Not the powder inside — the shell around it. Because for a huge share of the pills and softgels on the shelf, the answer is no, and the label won't always tell you plainly.
I run a sublingual strip company, so you can discount this accordingly. But I've spent enough time reading capsule spec sheets to know that "vegan" on the front of a bottle and "vegan" in the fine print are two different claims. This is the article I'd hand a friend who went plant-based and assumed their supplement routine came along for the ride. Sometimes it does. Often it doesn't. And the fix isn't always a strip — sometimes it's just a better-chosen capsule.
Fair warning: an earlier version of this article claimed our entire lineup was vegan. That was not accurate, and the corrected, product-by-product list is further down. Here's what "vegan" actually means once you get past the marketing, ours included.
What "vegan" actually means on a supplement label
There are two places a supplement can fail the vegan test, and they're independent of each other.
The first is the active ingredient — the nutrient itself. Some nutrients are traditionally sourced from animals: vitamin D3 is usually extracted from lanolin (sheep's wool grease), omega-3 EPA/DHA comes from fish oil, collagen is by definition animal-derived, and glucosamine is often shellfish-derived. A vegan version exists for some of these, but it's a deliberate sourcing choice, not the default — and for collagen there is no true vegan version at all.
The second is the delivery vehicle — the capsule shell, the gummy base, the coating. This is the one people miss. A perfectly plant-based nutrient can be packed inside a gelatin capsule made from cow or pig collagen, and the front label may still say nothing. "Vegan" is not a regulated term for supplements the way "USDA Organic" is regulated for food, so its use on a panel is only as trustworthy as the brand behind it.
The honest short version: a supplement is only vegan if both the active and its shell are plant-derived. Checking one and assuming the other is how most people end up unknowingly swallowing animal collagen every morning — and, as you'll see below, it's also how a brand ends up making a sloppy claim about its own catalogue.
The gelatin problem: what's hiding in a standard capsule
Most conventional two-piece capsules and nearly all softgels are made from gelatin, which is collagen extracted from animal skin, bone, and connective tissue — typically bovine or porcine. It's cheap, it's been used for a century, and it works beautifully as a shell. It is also, unambiguously, an animal product.
Gelatin doesn't show up on the front of the bottle. It lives in the "other ingredients" line, and often just reads "gelatin" with no species or source. For someone eating plant-based for ethical reasons, that one word is the whole ballgame — and it's easy to skim past when you're focused on the milligrams of the active.
Softgels are the sneakiest offender. That glossy amber shell around a fish-oil or vitamin-D softgel is gelatin plus glycerin, and the glycerin itself can be animal-derived too. So an omega-3 softgel can be non-vegan twice over: fish oil inside, animal gelatin outside. If you're plant-based and you've been taking softgels, it's worth a label re-read this week.
The nutrients vegans actually need to supplement — and why format matters
Going plant-based removes a few nutrients from your plate that are hard to get elsewhere. This isn't a knock on the diet; it's just chemistry. The short list most dietitians flag: vitamin B12, vitamin D, omega-3 (EPA/DHA), iron, and sometimes zinc and iodine.
B12 is the non-negotiable one. It's produced by bacteria, not plants, and there is no reliable unfortified plant food source — a point the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements states plainly in its B12 fact sheet. A peer-reviewed review in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Pawlak et al., 2013) found low B12 status common among vegans who don't supplement. So if you're plant-based, B12 isn't optional — which makes how you take it worth getting right.
That's where format re-enters the conversation, though with less drama than the industry likes to give it. For a vegan, two separate questions stack on top of each other: is this even vegan, and will I actually keep taking it? Both matter more than the delivery-route marketing on the box — a point I get into in bioavailability explained.
Vegan capsule alternatives, ranked by what they actually are
If you want off gelatin, you have four honest options. Here's the plain-English version of each.
1. HPMC (hypromellose) capsules. These are the standard "vegetarian capsule" — made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant-derived cellulose. They look and behave almost exactly like gelatin capsules, they're widely available, and they're genuinely vegan. If you like the capsule format and just want off animal gelatin, HPMC is the direct swap. This is the one I'd point most people to first.
2. Pullulan capsules. Pullulan is a polysaccharide produced by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans — fermentation-derived, FDA-affirmed GRAS, and allergen-free. It's a premium vegan shell with a better oxygen barrier than HPMC, which matters for sensitive actives. Slightly pricier, genuinely vegan.
3. Vegan softgels. Newer plant-based softgel shells (usually starch- or carrageenan-based) exist for oils like algae omega-3. They work, but they're less common and you have to verify each one.
4. Sublingual strips. A pullulan film dissolves in about 30 seconds — no shell to swallow at all. The film base is vegan by construction. Whether the finished product is vegan still depends entirely on what's loaded into it, which is exactly the trap this article is about, and exactly the one we fell into ourselves.
Notice that three of the four are just "a capsule that isn't gelatin." You do not have to change how you take your supplements to stop swallowing animal collagen. You just have to change the shell.
B12: the vegan-critical nutrient, and the numbers I'm not going to quote you
Since B12 is the one nutrient nearly every vegan has to supplement, it's worth a paragraph on delivery — and another correction, because an earlier version of this article handled it badly.
That version gave you precise absorption percentages for cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin, oral versus sublingual, down to a decimal point. I've removed them all. Those figures come from small studies under specific conditions — particular doses, particular forms, particular people — and the moment they land on a page next to a buy button they stop being pharmacology and start being a sales claim. That applies to my numbers as much as anyone's.
Here's what is fair to say. B12 uptake from a swallowed dose depends on intrinsic factor and stomach acid, and it varies a good deal between people. That's why the industry's standard workaround is a very large tablet: take enough, and enough gets through. It works, and it's cheap. The sublingual route is a real pharmacological route that's also used for B12. What I'm not going to tell you is that our strip gets more B12 into you than a well-chosen vegan tablet does — I don't have human data at our dose, in our format, to support that, and neither does anyone else selling you one.
So take the one you'll actually take. A plain high-dose vegan B12 tablet in an HPMC capsule is a completely legitimate choice. Correcting a shortfall doesn't require peak efficiency; it requires not skipping it for two years. If you physically can't swallow tablets, or you gag on them, that's the real gap a strip fills.
Vitamin D, omega-3, and iron: the other vegan gaps
Vitamin D. The D3 form (more effective at raising blood levels than D2) is traditionally made from lanolin — sheep's wool — so it's not vegan by default. Vegan D3 sourced from lichen now exists and is the one to look for; the NIH ODS vitamin D fact sheet covers why maintaining adequate status matters, especially for people with limited sun exposure. Lichen-derived D3 in an HPMC capsule is a clean vegan pick. Worth saying plainly here rather than burying it: our own Bone Support strip uses lanolin-derived D3, so it is not vegan. We chose the ingredient before we could source a lichen version, and we're not going to paper over it.
Omega-3. Skip the fish oil and go to the actual source fish get it from: algae. Algal-oil EPA/DHA is fully vegan and comes in vegan softgels or liquid. This one has to be a swallowed format, not a strip — the effective dose is far too large for a thin film. That's fine; the point is getting it, and a vegan algal softgel does that. We don't make one.
Iron. Plant (non-heme) iron is absorbed less efficiently than the heme iron in meat, so some plant-based eaters supplement — but standard iron pills carry a well-documented tolerance problem, with a substantial share of users reporting side effects like constipation and nausea in the first weeks (Tolkien et al., 2015, PLOS ONE). Iron itself is usually already vegan; the shell is the only thing to check. Pair iron with vitamin C, take it as your gut tolerates, and note that iron absorption is a tightly regulated process in your gut — no format shortcuts it. Iron is also the nutrient where dosing carelessly is genuinely dangerous: accidental iron overdose is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six. Keep any iron product away from kids, and in case of accidental overdose call a doctor or poison control centre immediately.
When a vegan pill still beats a strip
Here's the part a strip founder is supposed to skip. I won't.
If your situation is a bulk-dose nutrient — calcium, magnesium, a large algae-omega-3 dose, protein, or a fibre/greens supplement — a vegan capsule, powder or softgel is the right answer, not a strip. A thin sublingual film simply can't hold enough active for those, and several of them absorb perfectly well through the gut anyway. A vegan HPMC capsule solves the ethics question without fighting the chemistry. We don't sell any of those as strips, for exactly that reason.
And if you simply prefer swallowing a capsule and will be more consistent that way, an HPMC or pullulan capsule is a perfectly good vegan endpoint. The goal is off animal gelatin and actually taken — not strip-everything. That's the routine I'd put my mom on, and half of it is still capsules.
How to actually read a "vegan" label in 60 seconds
You don't need to trust the front of the bottle. Run this quick audit instead.
First, find the "other ingredients" or "capsule" line — not the Supplement Facts panel, the small print below it. If you see the word gelatin, it's not vegan, full stop. If you see HPMC, hypromellose, vegetable cellulose, or pullulan, the shell is plant-based.
Second, check the active's source for the known animal-derived nutrients: vitamin D should say "D3 (from lichen)" or "D2," omega-3 should say "algal" or "algae," collagen is animal-derived in every case, and glucosamine should say "vegetarian" or "from corn." Silence on source usually means the conventional animal version.
Third, look for a third-party vegan certification mark (Vegan Society, Certified Vegan) if it matters to you — it's not required, but it means someone audited the whole chain, including hidden processing aids like animal-derived glycerin.
