Most "which supplement format is best" guides are absorption-speed rankings with a product at the top. This one used to be too. Here's the rewrite.

Why we withdrew the speed ranking

This article used to open with a ranking, fastest to slowest, with sublingual strips in first place. We sell sublingual strips. You can see the problem.

But the deeper issue wasn't bias — it was that the ranking rested on physics I had backwards.

Sublingual absorption is real. It's how nitroglycerin is given for angina and how buprenorphine films are dosed. Those work because the specific molecule is small, suitably fat-soluble, potent at a tiny dose, and deliberately held in the mouth.

Here's what I'd missed: mucosal absorption needs contact time. The molecule has to sit against the tissue long enough to cross it. A film engineered to vanish in about 30 seconds gives it less time, not more. The rest of the dose is swallowed in saliva and handled by the digestive tract, exactly like a capsule's contents.

So "dissolves in 30 seconds" and "absorbs better under your tongue" are close to opposites. We were selling both at once.

When we reviewed the actives across our own range against the published literature, only a couple of them — caffeine and melatonin — had genuine support for sublingual absorption. Most of the rest are gut-dependent. That's an uncomfortable finding for a strip company, and it's why this page no longer has a speed ranking on it.

What "absorption" actually means

Two words get used interchangeably and shouldn't. Bioavailability is how much of a nutrient reaches your bloodstream in a usable form. Onset is how fast. A format can differ on one and not the other, and marketing routinely blurs them.

Both are properties of a specific molecule in a specific preparation in a specific person — not of a packaging category. This is why you should be sceptical of any percentage or multiplier printed next to a product. Ask whether the study was run on the finished product being sold. It almost never was.

And crucially: for many ingredients, going through the gut is the point. A probiotic has to reach your intestine. Polydextrose and other prebiotic fibres are fermented by bacteria in your colon. Collagen peptides need digestion before PEPT1 transporters can take them up. Iron absorption is regulated by hepcidin in the duodenum — your body controls that gate deliberately. Mushroom beta-glucans act on gut-immune receptors. D3 and K2 need bile-salt micelles, and trials comparing sublingual D3 with swallowed D3 have not found the sublingual route superior.

For every one of those, "bypasses your stomach" would be a downgrade.

The formats, honestly compared

Sublingual strips & films

A thin dissolvable film placed under the tongue, gone in about 30 seconds. What it genuinely solves: swallowing. If you gag on capsules — a real physical reflex, not squeamishness — or you're travelling without water, this is the format built for you. It's also a pre-measured dose in a pocket tin, with no sugar needed to make it palatable.

Pros: nothing to swallow; no water; consistent pre-measured dose; genuinely portable; no sugar, no chalk, no shaker bottle.

Cons: dose per strip is capped by the physical size of the film, so gram-scale doses (protein, creatine, fibre) are impossible; flavour matters because it dissolves in your mouth; fewer nutrients available as strips than as pills; higher cost per milligram than a bulk tablet.

Oral sprays

Liquid actives sprayed into the cheek and under the tongue. Some is absorbed mucosally, most is swallowed.

Pros: convenient, no water needed, easy for people who can't swallow pills. Cons: dose per actuation varies with technique; bottles leak and are bulkier than they look; some formulas taste unpleasant.

Liquids & drops

No disintegration step — the nutrient is already in solution.

Pros: flexible dosing, which genuinely matters for children and for anyone titrating a dose; easy for people with swallowing difficulty. Cons: dropper dosing is approximate; shorter shelf life once opened; often needs refrigeration; awkward to travel with.

Liposomal

Actives wrapped in phospholipid spheres intended to protect them through the gut and improve cellular uptake. There's genuine formulation science here for a handful of notoriously difficult nutrients.

Pros: a reasonable option for nutrients with known absorption problems, such as vitamin C at high doses or glutathione. Cons: considerably more expensive; quality varies enormously between manufacturers and "liposomal" on a label isn't a regulated term; still swallowed.

Powder

The only realistic option once you're dosing in grams.

Pros: best value per serving by a wide margin; the correct choice for protein, creatine, fibre, and electrolytes. Cons: requires water, a shaker, and washing up; texture and aftertaste are the number-one reason people abandon powders; poor portability; scoop dosing is imprecise.

Softgels

Oil-filled capsules, well suited to fat-soluble nutrients.

Pros: genuinely the right tool for omega-3s and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), which need fat to be absorbed; precise dose. Cons: usually gelatin, so not vegan unless specified; can be large and slippery; fish oils repeat on some people.

Capsules

The industry default, and for good reason.

Pros: precise dose; enormous ingredient range; well-studied; inexpensive; enteric coatings available where gastric protection matters, which is a real advantage for probiotics. Cons: you have to swallow them, which is the deal-breaker for a meaningful number of people; can irritate sensitive stomachs; needs water.

Tablets

Compressed powder, built for cost and shelf life.

Pros: cheapest per dose by far; very long shelf life; can carry high doses in one unit. Cons: often large and hard to swallow; more likely to cause stomach discomfort; binders and coatings add ingredients some people would rather avoid.

Gummies

Worth including because they're what many people switch to when they give up on pills.

Pros: pleasant, easy, high compliance in the short term. Cons: almost always contain added sugar; usually gelatin-based, so not vegan; easy to eat more than the serving; dose capacity is limited.

Do supplement strips bypass the stomach?
