The Anabolic Window Is Mostly a Myth
I'm going to say something that might lose me half my audience in the first paragraph: the post-workout anabolic window is mostly a myth.
A note before we start: an earlier version of this article used the 30-minute hook to argue that our format gets around your digestion. That argument doesn't hold, and I've rewritten the piece to say so plainly.
A 2013 meta-analysis of 23 studies by Schoenfeld, Aragon and Krieger in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that the supposed urgency of getting protein in within 30 minutes of your last rep doesn't hold up once you control for total daily protein. The effect on muscle growth vanished. What predicted gains was how much protein people ate across the whole day — not whether they drank a shake before their heart rate came down.
So why write about the 30 minutes at all? Because something real does happen in that window — it just isn't muscle-building urgency. It's rehydration, it's sodium, and it's the fact that your digestive system takes a while to come back online after hard work.

What Happens to Your Gut During a Hard Workout
During intense exercise — a hard run, heavy lifting, HIIT — your body does something ruthlessly efficient: it moves blood away from your digestive system and toward your working muscles. Research summarised by de Oliveira and Burini in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (2011) describes a large drop in blood flow to the gut during intense exercise.
The consequences are measurable. A substantial share of endurance athletes report gastrointestinal distress — cramping, nausea, bloating, the urgent hunt for a bathroom mid-race. Work by van Wijck et al. in PLoS One (2011) showed that this reduced gut blood flow causes tissue oxygen shortage and measurable loss of gut barrier integrity even in healthy men.
There's a practical consequence for anything you swallow right after training. Research in the British Journal of Nutrition found that a carb-protein drink taken five minutes after exercise left the stomach more slowly than the same drink taken 30 minutes later. Your stomach needs a moment.
The honest takeaway is not "so use a different format." It's simpler: wait a bit, and start with fluid.
What Actually Needs Replenishing (and What Can Wait)
Not everything is time-sensitive after a workout. Here's what the evidence supports:
Fluid and sodium — genuinely time-sensitive. The American College of Sports Medicine's position stand on exercise and fluid replacement advises drinking more than the fluid you lost during the first few hours of recovery, with sodium in it. Sodium is the key mineral — plain water alone carries a risk of diluting your blood sodium and actually makes it harder to hold onto fluid. This is the least glamorous item on the list and the most important. XYNE does not sell an electrolyte product; buy a proper sports drink or salt your food.
B vitamins — moderate priority, mechanism-based. Thiamin, riboflavin and B6 are used directly in the pathways that produce energy. A review by Woolf and Manore in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (2006) found that exercise may raise requirements for riboflavin and B6 in athletes, and that marginal B-vitamin status went along with reduced ability to perform high-intensity exercise. Worth noting: B12 supplementation improves performance only in people who are actually deficient — there's no benefit at adequate status. Whether you're deficient is a bloodwork question for a doctor, not something to guess at.
Protein — important, not time-critical. The Schoenfeld meta-analysis found total daily intake matters far more than timing, and a window of several hours on either side of training is plenty (Aragon & Schoenfeld, J Int Soc Sports Nutr, 2013). If you ate a couple of hours before training, you already have amino acids circulating. The panicked shake is unnecessary for most people. We don't sell protein and I have no reason to talk you into one.
Antioxidants — proceed with caution. This one surprises people. Paulsen et al. (2014) in The Journal of Physiology found that high-dose vitamin C and vitamin E taken after workouts blunted endurance training adaptations, and the same group found interference with cell signalling after heavy resistance work. The science is still debated, but the practical takeaway is clear: don't megadose antioxidants right after training. Your inflammatory response to exercise is part of how you get stronger. (Also worth saying: a high-dose vitamin C product would never fit in a strip anyway.)
The Format Question — and Why a Strip Isn't the Answer Either
Walk into any gym and watch the first five minutes after a hard session. Shaker bottles. Powder scoops. Someone hunting for a water fountain. Someone trying to get four capsules down with a sip from a Nalgene.
Every one of those formats asks your digestive system to do the work — dissolve, absorb, pass through the liver — at a moment when it's running at reduced capacity. That's a real observation, and for a while I thought it was the opening for our format.
It isn't, and I want to correct that in public. A strip that dissolves in about 30 seconds is mostly swallowed. Most of what's in it goes down your throat with your saliva and takes exactly the same digestive route as a capsule. Pharmacokinetic modelling of fast-dissolving oral films finds the gut is still the dominant path. A quick dissolve means less contact time with the tissue under your tongue, not more. So a strip taken after a workout is running the same compromised gut as everything else.
Sublingual absorption is a real pharmacological route — the tissue under the tongue is thin and well supplied with blood, and it's why nitroglycerin is given that way. It applies to a small number of small molecules held there for a while. It is not a general-purpose way around first-pass liver metabolism for whatever you put in a film, and there are no published human studies testing sublingual supplement delivery in a post-exercise context at all. I used to make a mechanism argument here. The mechanism argument doesn't survive the 30-second dissolve, so I've dropped it.
What I Actually Do After Training
Founder's compulsion, not a marketing line — here's my routine, in the order the evidence supports:
First: fluid with some sodium in it. That's the actual priority and it costs almost nothing.
Within 30 to 60 minutes: real food. A meal with protein, carbohydrate and salt. Not a supplement — food. This is where recovery actually comes from, and giving your stomach a little time before you load it is a reasonable idea given everything above.
Sometimes, if I'm heading straight into a working afternoon: an XYNE Energy strip, which contains L-theanine, caffeine from green tea, and B12 as methylcobalamin, with the doses printed on the label. I take it for the same reason anyone takes caffeine in the afternoon, not as a recovery intervention. What I don't take right after: high-dose vitamin C or E, any powder that's going to sit in a stomach that hasn't caught up yet, or anything marketed around "optimising the anabolic window."
When a Strip Is the Wrong Answer
I'd lose credibility if I didn't say this: strips have a dose ceiling. A thin film carries milligrams. Several things athletes genuinely use after training need grams:
- Creatine monohydrate — 3–5 grams daily. That's a powder, period. No strip is touching that payload, and we don't sell one.
- Protein — tens of grams. A shake or a meal. Not a strip. We don't sell one.
- Electrolyte rehydration — you need volume and sodium. Drink something. We don't sell one.
- Beta-alanine, citrulline, BCAAs at studied doses — multi-gram compounds. Powder or capsules, full stop. We don't sell these either.
Anyone selling you a sublingual creatine product, or a "recovery strip" with 20 grams of protein in it, is selling you a physics violation. The honest answer for post-workout is food and fluid, with supplements playing a small supporting role. That's not a sexy pitch. It's just true.
The Magnesium Question
A 2024 systematic review by Tarsitano et al. in the Journal of Translational Medicine reported that magnesium supplementation was associated with less muscle soreness and better recovery markers in the studies reviewed — while noting that the best type, timing and dose are, in the authors' words, not well elucidated. The signal was clearest in people with low magnesium status to begin with.
My honest take: magnesium is a daily-habit mineral, not a 30-minute-window play. Consistency beats timing. And to be explicit, since this is a supplement company's blog: XYNE does not sell a magnesium product. Effective doses run into the hundreds of milligrams, which is far past what a film can carry. If you want magnesium, buy a capsule or powder from someone else, and check with your doctor if you take other medications.
What the Gym Industry Gets Wrong About Recovery
The post-workout supplement category rests on two assumptions that don't survive scrutiny:
Assumption 1: consume specific nutrients within 30 minutes or lose your gains. The meta-analytic evidence says otherwise for protein and muscle growth. The real 30-minute priority is fluid and sodium — cheap and unglamorous, which is exactly why nobody leads with it.
Assumption 2: there's a format that gets around your digestion. There mostly isn't, and I say that as someone who sells an alternative format. Reduced gut blood flow after hard exercise is real, and it is a reason to wait a few minutes and start with fluid — not a reason to believe a film routes around your stomach. It doesn't.
What our format is actually good for is narrower and more boring: people who can't or won't swallow capsules, and people who can't stand the taste of powders.
