I spent an embarrassing amount of last fall doing what I should have spent five minutes doing: tracking my caffeine spend. Three coffee shop visits a week at the Charleston roaster down the street, two energy drinks on long-build days, the occasional pre-flight espresso at the airport — the numbers added up faster than I expected. The monthly total was somewhere north of $90 before I'd added in the time spent waiting in line.

This was about the time we were doing the cost-per-absorbed-milligram math on the XYNE Energy strip for an internal review.   2. Coffee shop coffee (the real-world habit for many of us)
  3. Canned energy drinks (Red Bull, Celsius, Monster — the convenience-store category)
  4. Caffeine pills (No-Doz, Vivarin, generic — the cheap stimulant-only option)
  5. XYNE Energy strip (sublingual, B12 + L-theanine + caffeine combination)

For each, we need the per-serving cost, the caffeine dose, the absorption fraction, and the time-to-peak. Then we can do the per-absorbed-milligram math fairly.

Format-by-format absorption numbers

Caffeine absorption is high across all five formats. This is the part that matters: caffeine is well-absorbed orally at roughly 99% efficiency, per the pharmacokinetic literature. So the absorption-fraction comparison is less dramatic for caffeine than it is for, say, B12. Where the formats differ is in onset speed and total absorbed-mg per dose, not in the absorbed fraction.

The time-to-peak numbers, from published pharmacokinetic studies:

The absorbed-mg per dose, in standard servings:

  • Coffee shop coffee (16 oz): ~165 mg caffeine, ~99% absorbed = ~163 mg absorbed.
  • Canned energy drink: typically 80–200 mg caffeine, depending on brand. Red Bull (8.4 oz) is 80 mg; Celsius is 200 mg; Monster (16 oz) is 160 mg.
  • Caffeine pill (No-Doz): 200 mg per pill, ~99% absorbed = ~198 mg absorbed.

The cost numbers, normalized

The honest takeaway from the cost-per-absorbed-mg row: the caffeine pill is the cheapest absorbed caffeine on the market. Drip coffee at home is the second cheapest. Coffee shop coffee and energy drinks are significantly more expensive per absorbed milligram. The XYNE strip is in the middle of the pack.

If "cheapest milligrams" is the only thing you're solving for, the answer is: a caffeine pill. The fact that nobody is solving only for that is the rest of the article.

What you're actually paying for in each format

Per-mg cost is a useful but incomplete frame. Each format charges a premium for what comes alongside the caffeine. Let's be honest about each:

Canned energy drinks. You're paying for caffeine, plus sugar or sweetener, plus B vitamins (at low doses), plus taurine and other added compounds, plus the can and the cold. The cost-per-mg is high because cans, refrigeration, and brand marketing are expensive.

Caffeine pills. You're paying for caffeine. That's it. No taste, no ritual, no other compounds, no warmth. For some people that's all they want. For most people there's a reason they don't reach for a caffeine pill at 7 a.m. — the missing things matter.

What coffee does that strips can't

I want to spend a paragraph on this because it's tempting to flatten "coffee" into "caffeine delivery" and that misses most of what coffee is.

Coffee has a sensory experience strips don't. It's warm. It tastes like coffee. It's tied to a morning ritual, often with another person, often in a place you find pleasant. The chlorogenic acids in coffee have peer-reviewed evidence for cardiometabolic effects beyond caffeine alone. The act of sitting with a coffee for 20 minutes is a different psychological event from putting a strip under your tongue.

Where the strip is the better answer

The strip pulls ahead in specific cases:

  • Travel. Wallet-fit, no water, no spilling, TSA-friendly, no airport-coffee-line tax.

Can I take a strip and drink coffee in the same morning?
