What happens inside your body when stress stops being occasional and starts being the baseline — and what actually helps.


There's a version of tired that sleep doesn't fix. You know the one. Eight hours, still exhausted. Coffee helps for forty-five minutes, then the fog rolls back in. Your brain can't hold a grocery list. You snap at people you love and then can't figure out why. You tell yourself it's just a busy season. But the season has lasted two years.

If you've searched "supplements for burnout" at 11pm on your phone, you've probably already waded through a wall of adaptogen ads promising to "reset your adrenals." I'm not going to do that. "Adrenal fatigue" isn't a recognized medical diagnosis — the Endocrine Society has said so explicitly. But the biochemistry underneath it? The part where chronic stress systematically drains the nutrients your body needs to handle stress? That part is real, well-documented, and worth understanding before you spend money on anything.

That's the design. It works beautifully for acute stress — a bear, a car accident, a final exam. The system breaks when the threat never passes. When the stressor is your job, your caregiving load, your financial situation, or all three at once, the HPA axis doesn't get to reset. Cortisol stays elevated. And your body starts paying a compounding tax on every system cortisol was supposed to temporarily suppress.


The depletion spiral: how chronic stress drains what you need most

Here's the part that doesn't show up in adaptogen ads. Sustained cortisol elevation doesn't just make you feel bad.   • Zinc plays a role in immune function and neurotransmitter synthesis. Cortisol-driven immune suppression increases zinc demand.

The cruel efficiency of this loop: the nutrients stress depletes are the same ones your body needs to dampen the stress response. Magnesium calms the HPA axis. B vitamins support serotonin and dopamine synthesis. Vitamin C supports adrenal function. Lose them, and the volume knob on your stress response gets stuck higher.


53 million Americans are living this right now

This isn't a niche problem. The National Alliance for Caregiving estimates that more than 53 million adults in the United States serve as unpaid caregivers — to aging parents, disabled children, spouses with chronic illness. What actually helps: the evidence, honestly

Magnesium + B6 combination. Curcumin. A systematic review in Journal of Affective Disorders (2022) found that curcumin supplementation was associated with reduced markers of stress and improved mood scores. The challenge: unenhanced oral curcumin has roughly 1% bioavailability (Anand et al. 2007, Molecular Pharmaceutics). Most of the curcumin in a standard pill gets metabolized before it reaches your bloodstream.

Lion's mane. Preclinical and early clinical evidence suggests lion's mane beta-glucans support nerve growth factor (NGF) production, which may help with the cognitive fog that accompanies chronic stress. The evidence is promising but earlier-stage than the nutrients above — worth including in a stack, not worth building a stack around.

Gut support. Chronic stress disrupts the gut microbiome — elevated cortisol reduces microbial diversity and compromises the intestinal barrier. The gut-brain axis is a real bidirectional pathway, not a marketing concept.


When a supplement is the wrong answer

Here's the defensive paragraph I include in every article, because I mean it.

If you're experiencing any of the following, a supplement is not the right first step:

  • You can't get out of bed most days, or you've lost interest in things that used to matter. That's a clinical conversation, not a supplement problem. Talk to a physician or therapist — not because something is "wrong with you," but because clinical-grade interventions exist and they work.
